Saiju also tells me that the Knanaya are very proud of their Jewish-Christian ancestry (more of Jewish, actually). Apparently, when the Knanaya community were offered SC/ST (Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe - castes and tribes that receive reservations or "affirmative action" under government policies) status, they turned it down because they felt it degraded their status.
